Ask Dr. K
HIV IN SWEAT?

QUESTION
Is HIV present in sweat? If someone is HIV+, and their sweat gets in your eye, can you get HIV?

ANSWER
No, HIV is not present in sweat. So if you were to get the sweat of an HIV-positive person in your eye, nose, mouth, or even in a cut during an athletic event, for example, it would not put you at risk of acquiring of HIV. HIV is only present in certain body fluids: blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk. [Source: Wormser, GP, Bittker, S., Forseter, et al. Absence of infectious human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in "natural" eccrine sweat. J Infect Dis, 1992, Jan., 165(1), 155-8.]
