Ask Dr. K
NEGATIVE TEST AFTER 8 MONTHS

QUESTION
The last time I had unsafe sex was 8 months ago, I just had an HIV test and it was negative. Do I have to worry?

ANSWER
There is a window of time between infection and a positive HIV test, but this period is generally only 1 to 3 months. HIV antibody test results 3 months after exposure are usually highly accurate. Many doctors recommend that sexually active men who have sex with men with multiple partners get tested every 3 to 6 months for STDs and every 6 months for HIV.
