Ask Dr. K

Can lube be bad for you in any way?

Lube is supposed to be used on your genitals, inside your ass or vagina. If used in or on other body parts—eyes, nose, or swallowed—there is low likelihood of harm but it may not be comfortable.

There is bad lube however and that bad lube has spermicide or N-9. The FDA should have banned N-9 containing lubes or condoms a long time ago but for various reasons has not. Avoid any lube containing N-9 or spermicide. The N-9 or spermicide does not work and only irritates your body making you more likely to get an infection.

The trick with lube is picking the best type for the kind of sex you like to have. Read this previous Dr. K answer about lube or these delightful lube reviews from the folks at Good Vibrations.

To your health,
Dr. K
