BLOW JOBS AND PROTECTION

QUESTION
I am considering my first time experience with another man who has offered to give me oral sex. I am married so I want to be very careful. If I proceed with this activity, what health advice can you give me? Is it common to wear a condom when receiving a blow job?

ANSWER
Oral sex is fun and a great way to experiment in having sex. Getting a blow job has extremely low (some say zero) risk of HIV infection but we do see cases of other STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes and syphilis spread through oral sexóboth giving and receiving. Most of those STDs that you can get from oral sex are treatable, but using a condom during oral sex will lower your risk of getting an STD. I know plenty of first timers and sex work professionals who regularly use condoms for oral sex. With regular partners most people do give up the condom. Thatís why itís important that you and your partner(s) get regular STD check-ups. Because sexually active people carry STDs without knowing it, the only way to know is to get a check-up.
