HAIR-LOSS DUE TO SYPHILIS TREATMENT

QUESTION
I was recently diagnosed with Syphilis and have undergone the 3 injection process. At the moment I am still waiting for the final RPR test to make certain that it is completely cleared. In the meantime, I am deeply embarrassed by the patchy hair loss that I have experienced. I am wondering if you have a sense if I am expected to regain my hair back in the affected areas and also how long it may take.

ANSWER
Hair loss is one of the symptoms of syphilis during the secondary stage. Hair should gradually regrow after effective treatment. Although, this hair growth will take time, it should begin after the 3 injections. Some patients lose all of their hair before it regrows again, and some patients see improvement after hair becomes merely patchy. It varies from person to person, and unfortunately, there is no set timeline. As long as you have been retested and shown to be responding to treatment, you should see regrowth soon.

To your health,
Dr. K
