FOR PROVIDERS

Healthcare providers and educators

For over 100 years, San Francisco City Clinic has been providing expert guidance and technical assistance on sexual-health topics to providers from around the world.

We are dedicated to improving the sexual health of the community through our three core activities.

  1. Patient care: We conduct over 17,000 visits a year in our clinic.
  2. Clinical teaching: We are a training site for medical and nursing students, residents, and fellows, with over 100 trainees rotating through our clinic annually.
  3. Research: We participate in NIH, CDC, and industry-funded research projects with a focus on improving STI and HIV diagnostic tests, treatments, and prevention strategies.

Our resources include important alerts, up-to-date guidelines, information on reporting STIs, training opportunities, educational materials for your patients, epidemiology reports, and more. You can also find information here about how to request training assistance and quality improvement around sexual health and HIV topics.

Truvada went generic on September 30, 2020. For more details on how changes in pricing for the medication may affect your patients, please click here.

Visit Process

VISIT PROCESS

We want you to feel comfortable getting care

Clinic Image
  • Scheduled appointments: SF City Clinic now sees patients by appointment. To make an appointment call 628-217-6600 to schedule.

  • Non-scheduled appointments: You can come to San Francisco City Clinic any time during the hours we are open to request a drop-in appointment. If there are no appointments available, we will schedule you for another day. If we called and asked you to come in, or if you have an urgent sexual health need, we will do our best to accommodate you on the day you drop-in. To increase the likelihood that you will be seen, we suggest you arrive before noon. Average wait time is less than 60 minutes. Depending on the time of day and how busy we are, some waits may be longer or shorter than average. Your visit at the clinic will take between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the services you need.

  • Appointments are available on Thursday mornings for HIV primary care (Early Care Clinic). Call 628-217-6624 to schedule.

Registration

When you arrive at the clinic, the staff person at the front desk will ask you some questions and complete your registration form. Our services are confidential but not anonymous. This means that you’ll be asked to provide your name and date of birth, as well as an address and phone number if you have them. This allows us to get in touch if you need treatment for a positive test result. You’ll also be asked why you came into the clinic and whether or not you have symptoms related to an STI.

Cost

SF City Clinic is not currently charging patients for services. You may need to pay for medications if we are unable to provide medications for the services you receive that day.

You should never receive a bill from City Clinic.

However, if you do receive one in error, you will never be held liable for any charges incurred at SF City Clinic. If you receive a statement indicating you owe money for those services, please contact the SF Health Network Customer Service Department:

Exam, testing, treatment, and counseling

A licensed clinician (nurse practitioner or physician) will talk with you in a private examination room. The clinician will ask you about why you came into the clinic and any symptoms you may have, and about your sexual practices and other behaviors that might put you at risk for getting an STI. The clinician will do a thorough STI exam and determine what testing is needed.

Not every patient will be tested for HIV and other STIs. It depends on your sexual practices and drug use. Getting tested at SF City Clinic may involve a blood draw, urine sample, and swabs (from the vagina, butt and/or throat).

If you need a vaccine or treatment for an STI, we will give it to you while you’re at the clinic. Sometimes you will be given a prescription that you can fill at a pharmacy. We will help you figure out how to get your prescription for PEP and PrEP medications filled at no or minimal cost, regardless of insurance status.

If you are diagnosed with certain STIs (for example, syphilis or HIV), you will talk with a counselor. The counselor will answer any questions you have, will make sure you receive treatment, and will talk with you about how you can ensure that your sex partners are tested and treated

What Our Patients Say...

“I once got a blood test there that I was very freaked out about (not for a logical reason, mostly because I was afraid of needles). The nurse actually WAITED with me while the results were being processed to calm me down. This is a great place- they are so understanding of everything.”

~ Alexandra
